As some of our families may remember, E.L. Haynes was founded as an extended-year school. In 2020, we aligned our calendar with DC Public Schools as part of a citywide push to streamline COVID-19 resources for families and students. As part of our strategic plan, we also committed to re-evaluating how we use time to drive student success, and after returning to in-person learning in SY2021-22, we spent this past year re-envisioning our school calendar model to better serve students in grades Pre-K3 through 12. 

Thank you to the hundreds of families who shared your input via our Community Surveys this year, and to those who joined our school year calendar focus group. Your input helped us create a calendar that priorities student learning and growth, family needs, and staff sustainability.

Founded in 2004, E.L. Haynes Public Charter School is named for Dr. Euphemia Lofton Haynes, the first Black woman to receive a doctorate in mathematics and a DCPS teacher for nearly 50 years.
